In most cases, applying for a nonimmigrant (temporary) visa to visit the United States requires some advance planning. Don't expect to be able to just show up at a U.S. consulate and walk away with a visa! You will most likely need to prepare some paperwork in advance (and in some cases, get advance permissions from immigration authorities in the United States), and possibly schedule an appointment for an in-person interview. You will also need to know what you're trying to prove to the consular official you meet with, in order to maximize your chances of successfully obtaining the visa.
