Once you are granted asylum in the U.S., or enter as a refugee, you gain important new rights. You may stay in the United States for the long-term -- with no expiration date, though you should, for various reasons, apply for a green card within one year of your entry as a refugee or approval as an asylee. You can petition to bring certain family members to the U.S., get a work permit, and travel outside the U.S. (so long as you do not return to the country from which you fled).
