USCIS Form I-864A is signed by the sponsor and a household member. When a household member of the sponsor signs Form I-864A, it means that the household member along with the sponsor is responsible for supporting the alien named on the form.

When to use

You must use this form if the sponsor’s financial resources are not sufficient to comply with the requirements the Affidavit of Support (Form I-864). By signing Form I-864A, the household member combines his resources with the sponsor’s income and assets to enable the sponsor to comply with the requirements of Form I-864. More than one household member can combine his or her resources with the sponsor’s resources to enable the sponsor to comply with the requirements but each household member must file a separate Form I-864A.

Who is a household member?

For the purpose of Form I-864A, a household member is the sponsor’s spouse, adult child, parent or sibling whose principal residence is the same as the sponsor. A relative of the sponsor or another person can also qualify as a household member for the purpose of Form I-864A if the sponsor has lawfully listed that person as a dependent on the his or her latest income tax returns.

The alien named on Form I-864A can also be a household member if the alien’s income will continue from the same source even after he or she obtains permanent residence in the US and:

  • the alien and the sponsor have the same principal residence or
  • the sponsor is the alien’s spouse

Household member’s obligations

The household member signing Form I-864A must provide any and all financial support necessary to assist the sponsor in maintaining the alien at or above the minimum income provided for in section 213A(a)(1)(A) of the Immigration and Naturalization Act. The obligations of the household member continue as long as Form I-864 Affidavit in Support is enforceable. The household member will be jointly and severally liable for payment of any and all obligations owed by the sponsor under Form I-864 Affidavit in Support. Once a household member signs Form I-864A, he or she authorizes the Social Security Administration to release information about him or her to the Department of State and the USCIS. The USCIS will verify the information provided by the household member on Form I-864A. False information will result in criminal prosecution.
