To apply for a certificate of citizenship, you must submit an application on Form N-600. Form N-600 must be submitted if you are claiming US citizenship based on citizen parentage.

Who Can File

Form N-600 Application for Certificate of Citizenship must be filed by you if you are claiming to have acquired (at birth) or derived (after birth) US citizenship through a US citizen parent. If you were born a US citizen outside the US or you have fulfilled the requirements for becoming a US citizen prior to your 18th birthday, you may file this form at any time during your life time. You can also file this form if before your 18th birthday and prior to February 27, 2001 you regularly resided in the US after admission as lawful permanent resident and both your parents or the parent having your sole and legal custody or your sole surviving parent became a US citizen by naturalization. The US citizen parent or legal guardian have legal and physical custody of the an adopted or biological child under 18 years of age qualifying for citizenship under Naturalization and Immigration Act can also file this form on behalf of such child.

Application

You must answer all questions on the form correctly. Do not give any false answers. False answers can result in your application being rejected and you can face criminal prosecution and deportation. You will be required to provide your name, contact details, your immigration status and information about your eligibility for US citizenship. US citizen parents filing the form on behalf of their biological or adopted children must provide all relevant information about the child. The application must be accompanied by documentary evidence of eligibility. If you are submitting any foreign language document as evidence, ensure that you provide a translation. The translator must certify that he/she is competent to translate and the translation is true and accurate. A fee of $460 must be paid at the time of submitting the form. If the application is made by a US citizen on behalf of his or her adopted child, the fee payable is $420. You must also provide two photographs along with your application. The specifications of the photographs are provided on the instruction sheet. The completed Form N-600 must be submitted to the USCIS office having jurisdiction over your place of residence in the United States.
