Immigration Impact - Missouri

Missouri’s population increased by 478,000, or nine percent, between 1990 and 2000, bringing its population to 5.6 million people.
Between 1990 and 2000, Christian County was the fastest-growing county in the state, increasing by 66 percent. Missouri recorded its largest decennial population growth of the 20th century between 1990 and 2000, fueled more by migration than births. State demographer Ryan Burson estimates that 286,000 people moved into the state during the 1990s, contrasted with about 210,000 net gain in population due to natural increase (births minus deaths).
Foreign Born Population Missouri’s foreign-born population increased 81 percent during the 1990s. Between 1990 and 2000, Missouri gained 69,000 immigrants, bringing the total number of foreign-born residents in the state to 151,000. The increase in the foreign-born population during the 1990s accounted for 14 percent of the state’s overall population increase during the decade (not including the impact of children born to immigrants).

About 335,000 people in Missouri are immigrants or the children of immigrants, six percent of the state’s population.2

A marker of the impact of immigration on the Missouri’s population size: The state’s Hispanic population nearly doubled during the 1990s, to 118,592. Fifty-six Missouri counties had Hispanic population growth exceeding 100 percent.3 While the Hispanic population includes many native-born residents, it is an indicator of the dramatic contribution immigration has made to population growth in the area. Immigration and Your Community FAIR has immigration data for local communities in Missouri as well. See our full listing of pages about Missouri for information about your locality.
Trends for the Future The Census Bureau projects that Missouri’s population will increase by 13 percent between 2000 and 2025, to 6.3 million.
