18,905 Foreign-Born Population in Ann Arbor

The 2000 census recorded 18,905 foreign-born residents in Ann Arbor. That was a 16.6 percent share of the overall population, which was much higher than for the state (5.3%). The 2000 data showed an increase of 58.3 percent in the immigrant population since 1990, which compared with a decrease of 2.5 percent in the native-born population (which includes children born to immigrants) over the same period. That meant that the immigrant population accounted directly for all of the city's population increase.
In 2000, the Census recorded that more than three-fifths (62.6%) of the city's foreign-born population had entered since 1990. This was a much higher rate than for the state overall (44.9%). More than one-quarter (28.3%) of the foreign-born residents had become naturalized U.S. citizens. This was a much lower rate than for the state overall (45.8%).

Another indicator of the impact of the foreign-born population may be seen in data on residents who speak a language other than English at home. In the city in 2000, the share of other-than-English speakers at home (age 5 and older) was 20.1 percent. More than one-third (34.2%) of those persons admitted to speaking English less than very well.

The foreign-born population of the city in 1990 was about 11,900 residents. This was a population share of 10.9 percent. By comparison, the foreign-born population share of the state in 1990 was 3.8 percent.

POPULATION PROJECTION 2025
The current rate of population change between 1990-00, if continued, would result in a population in 2025 of 125,800 residents. That is 10.3 percent more residents than in the 2000 population.

FOREIGN STUDENTS
The 2002/03 Institute of International Education annual report furnishes the following information on the number of foreign students in post-secondary institutions in Ann Arbor: Concordia C. - 5, U. of Mich. - 4,149, Washtenaw C.C. - 543.
