Massachusetts Has 87,000 Illegal Aliens Resided In The State
87,000 illegal aliens resided in Massachusetts as of 2000, according to INS figures. This is two percent higher than the previous INS estimate in 1996 and 93 percent higher than the estimate for 1992.23 However, the Migration Policy Institute estimated that the 2000 illegal resident population was much higher, noting that it was at least 100,000.24
Massachusetts’s authorities requested compensation of $67 million from the federal government in FY’99 for the incarceration of illegal aliens in state and local jails and prisons (under the federal State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, or SCAAP), but it received only $26 million in compensation, leaving $41 million in uncompensated costs to be borne by Massachusetts’s taxpayers.
