Population Growth In Massachusetts Increased By Six Percent
Massachusetts increased by six percent, or 333,000 people, between 1990 and 2000, bringing its population to 6.3 million people.
Between 1990 and 2000, Nantucket County was the fastest growing county in the state, increasing 58 percent.
Foreign Born Population
Massachusetts’s foreign-born population increased 35 percent during the 1990s. Between 1990 and 2000, Massachusetts gained 199,000 immigrants, bringing the total number of foreign-born residents in the state to 773,000.
The increase in the foreign-born population during the 1990s accounted for 60 percent of the state’s overall population increase during the decade.
Demonstrating the impact of recent policies of mass immigration, 40 percent of Massachusetts’s immigrant population has arrived in the state since 1990.
About 1.7 million people in Massachusetts are immigrants or the children of immigrants, 28 percent of the state’s population.4
