Also referred to as a permanent resident card, a green card is proof of an individual's official immigration america status and his lawful residency in the country.  Under U.S. immigration law, a green card holder can work and live permanently and is considered registered in the United States.  There are several avenues for an immigrant to acquire a green card usa, among which are:

(1) marriage to an American citizen;

(2) being an immediate relative of an American citizen;

(3) being petitioned by a green card holder;

(4) being the natural child of a green card holder if he or she is unmarried;

(5) being an unmarried adopted child under 18 years of age or an unmarried stepchild not over 21 years of age;

(6) being sponsored by an employer; and

(7) participating in the green card lottery
