Question:

How long does an I-601 form take to change status?

  • USCIS has up to fifteen months to process documents of this nature.
  • If the case involves certain factors, you may be able to speed the process up by asking for an expedited processing.  Asking for expedited processing of your I-601 usually require you to provide proof that you will suffer an extreme hardship because of the decision to deny your legal entry to the United States. Proof of a severe medical condition or a destitute state, for example, can qualify you for an expedited processing, in which your application will be given a priority status. This usually requires the attachment of medical or financial records. You should also include any other legal information that may be relevant to the case to the application, so that the USCIS office has all of the required information to process your petition.
  • The processing of this application, in some extreme cases, can be performed on the same day as an in-person application.
