A: When hiring citizens or non-citizens for employment in the United States, a U.S. employer is required to fill out Form I-9. You must review the employment eligibility and identity document(s) that an applicant submits to ascertain whether the document(s) concern the individual and appear to be genuine and record the information on the form. Since April 3, 2009, some of the documents needed for I-9 form have been deleted and new ones have been added. Only documents on the "List of Acceptable Documents" set forth on the revised Form I-9 may be utilized by employers. Expired documents may no longer be used as forms of employment verification or identification. Employees may submit one document from List A or one document from List B and one document from List C. Some of the acceptable documents from List A include 1) an unexpired foreign passport with INS Form I-94 displaying unexpired employment authorization or I-551 stamp, 2) an Alien Registration Receipt Card with a photo, and 3) an Unexpired Temporary Tesident Card. From List B, some of the documents that may be used to establish identity are 1) a driver's licence issued by the Canadian government, 2) a school i.d. with a photo, and 3) a military dependent's i.d. card. To prove employment eligibility, some of the acceptable documents include 1) a Certification of Birth Abroad issued by the State Department and 2) an unexpired employment authorization document.
