What Documents do I need when Applying for Naturalization?

Q:  I am a legal green card holder and I am also married to a U.S. citizen.  What documents do I have to furnish along with my application for naturalization?

Answers

A:  The n-400 form is the application for naturalization; permanent residents seeking U.S. citizenship must complete it.  Applicants must include two passport-size, color photos with the form; otherwise the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will send back the application.  In addition, applicants should submit the following documents for n400: (1) a money order or check for the fingerprinting fee and the application fee and (2) a copy of both sides of their permanent resident card (Form I-551).  Those who have lost the card should send a copy of the receipt of their Application to Replace Alien Registration Receipt Card (Form I-90).  Robin must also provide proof that Tim has been an American citizen for the last three years and may do so by submitting a birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship, a naturalization certificate, the "Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America" (Form FS240) or the inside of the signature page and front cover of her husband's U.S. passport.  She must also include proof that all previous marriages have been terminated (i.e. a death certificate, annulment, or divorce decree), her current marriage certificate, and documents mentioning her and her spouse, such as either 1) an IRS tax return summary for the last three years, 2) copies of income tax forms that she and her spouse filed for the last three years and certified by the IRS, or 3) birth certificates of children, mortgagese, leases, bank accounts, or tax returns.  Documents that are not in English should be translated, and applicants should attach a declaration from the translator that the translation is accurate and that he or she is competent to translate.  Failure to include the required documents may cause the the processing of the application to be delayed.
