What should I expect at the green card interview?

I have received a notice of a personal interview for my green card and I don’t know what to expect. What is the immigration officer looking for in an applicant? How many people conduct the interview? Will I need to submit documents or any other personal information at the interview?

Once the State Department issues the immigrant visa number, the next step for most applicants is a green card interview. During the interview, an immigration official will review all documentation and it is best to keep track of documentation sent and answers given on paper in order to be consistent when answering in person. You should bring originals of all the documents of which you sent copies to the interview for inspection. The immigration official will want to make sure the documents are authentic. You should be polite and respectful during the interview. You do not need to be dressed up, but you should look respectable. The immigration official will use subjective means to determine whether you are approved—which means you want the official to like you! You should never offer gifts or money to an immigration official as this could be interpreted as a bribe, which could hurt your chances of approval. Digital fingerprints will likely also be taken at the time of the interview and possibly digital photos as well.
