How many immigrants are offered asylum in the US?

Given all the wars, third world poverty, and general despondency in the world, it seems that we would have more refugees applying for protection in the U.S. than we can handle. Does the U.S. admit many people to the U.S. with refugee status and from what countries do they come?

Answers

A total of 60,108 persons were admitted to the United States as refugees during. The leading countries of nationality for refugees were Burma, Iraq, and Bhutan. It takes time to assess whether each refugee qualifies for asylum status which allows the refugee to live and work in the U.S. permanently, so all 60,000 refugees admitted would not receive asylum at the same time. During 2008, 22,930 individuals were granted asylum, including 12,187 who were granted asylum affirmatively by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and 10,743 who were granted asylum defensively by an immigration judge during removal proceedings. The leading countries of nationality for persons granted asylum were China, Columbia and Haiti.
