Why not just try to get into the US from Mexico illegally?

I am from Mexico and know many people who have entered into California illegally, and I have known some who tried to enter but were sent back to Mexico once discovered. With so many illegal immigrants in California, it seems that it would not be a big deal if I tried and did not get in. Wouldn’t the U.S. officials just send me back to Mexico?

Answers

Entering the U.S. illegally is crime. Under federal law (8 U.S.C. § 1325), anyone who enters the Unites States illegally is committing a misdemeanor offense and can be sentenced to a fine or six months in prison. Attempting to enter again after one offense is even worse. The federal law accompanying § 1325 is 8 U.S.C. § 1326 makes the offense of reentering, or attempting to reenter the United States after being removed or deported a felony offense. A felony could result in significant jail time and will prevent you from ever entering the U.S. legally. The penalties are high because the U.S. places a high value on stopping illegal immigration while promoting legal immigration.
