Before the issuance of an immigrant visa, every applicant, regardless of age, must undergo a medical examination. The consular officer will schedule a medical exam for every visa applicant. The exam is conducted by private doctors and the fee must be paid by the applicant to the doctor. The main purpose of the medical exam is to verify that you are not inadmissible due to health problems.
Examination costs must be paid by the applicant in addition to the visa fees. You will be told the examination fees before you attend the exam. Certain communicable diseases will prevent you from obtaining an immigrant visa. Generally speaking, only illnesses which threaten the health and welfare of others will present a problem. There are waivers for some conditions so if you are denied an immigrant visa based on medical issues, you should consult an immigration attorney about the possibility of obtaining a waiver to allow you to continue with the immigration process.
