Can I adjust my visa status from temporary to permanent?

I came to the United States just for a visit, but I met someone special and would like to stay in the U.S., find a job, and find out if this special person is the one for me. I don’t want to stay on a fiancé visa because I don’t know this person well enough to make that commitment. Is there some way I can change my temporary visa to a permanent visa?

If you are in the United States on a temporary visa, but you decide you want to live in the U.S. permanently, you can apply for an adjustment of status visa. To begin the process of adjustment of status, you need to complete an I-485 application. There are different additional forms and affidavits depending on your particular visa situation. Most applicants will be required to submit Form G-325A Biographic Data Sheet, Form I-693 Medical Examination Sheet, and two color photos taken within 30 days.

Anyone applying for an adjustment of status visa needs to use caution regarding the timing of their request to adjust status. If you request to adjust status too soon after arriving in the U.S. on a temporary visa, immigration officials may become suspicious as to the truth of your temporary visa application and officials may have you removed from the United States if they believe there is evidence of fraud in the misrepresentation on the application.
