The i 9 employment form is completed by each employer within three business days of hiring either a citizen or a non-citizen, and its purpose is to confirm that a new employee is authorized to work in the U.S.. Employers must record on the i-9 employment form (1) the title of the document, (2) the expiration date (if there is one), (3) the document number, (4) the date of commencement of employment and (5) the issuing authority. Section 1 of the i 9 employment verification form is completed by the employee when he or she is hired. Employers are required Form I-9 for a period of three years following the date of employment or one year following the end of the employment, whichever is later.
