Also referred to as the Tier-1 Visa, the Highly-Skilled Migrant Programme visa is a visa offered by the United Kingdom to non-residents of the U.K., allowing them to work and live there for a period of two years. Recipients of the visa may request a visa extension for three years and apply for permanent residence after five years. Established in January 2002, the hsmp visa makes it possible for applicants to qualify for a visa based solely on their abilities. The visa is issued to individuals who satisfy the points requirements, which are distributed according to skills, education, and salary, among other categories. An applicant is not required to obtain an offer of employment or sponsorship and is allowed to work for any employer provided that he or she has received training in the field in question and intends to establish his or her domicile in the U.K.
