For one, the new immigration law offers or restores Canadian citizenship to individuals who lost it as a result of prior laws or who never obtained it.  Secondly, it permits individuals adopted overseas between January 1, 1947 and February 14, 1977  by Canadian parents to apply for citizenship. Thirdly, it restricts Canadian citizenship eligibility to the children (first generation) of Canadian parents.  The new law does away with the requirement that individuals of second or following generations and abroad submit an application to hold on to their citizenship and to either establish a substantial link to Canada prior to their 28th birthday or reside in Canada for a period of one year.
