To qualify for a diversity immigrant visa, an alien must have:

  • 1) at minimum, completed high school or its equivalent, or
  • 2) within 5 years of the date of the american visa application, completed 24 months of work experience in a field requiring at minimum 2 years of experience or training.
  • The alien must also not be a native of a state with a high admission rate.

The percentage of visas allocated to the natives of each foreign country for any fiscal year is limited to 7 percent. Each year, the U.S. government distributes 50,000 green cards through its green card lottery alternatively known as the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program.
