USCIS Naturalization

Lawful permanent residents eligible for the naturalization process to become citizens of the United States begin the process by submitting Form N-400, Application for Naturalization to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Once the application is preliminarily processed, the applicant will receive a letter directing him to an appointment to be fingerprinted for an FBI background check. Once the background check has been processed, USCIS will notify the applicant of his Naturalization Interview where the applicant will have to answer questions about his background and motivations for becoming a U.S. Citizen. At the interview, the applicant will also have to take tests to gauge his ability to read, write and speak English and his knowledge of U.S. history and government. If the applicant passes the interview and tests successfully, he will be invited to take the Oath of Allegiance. Sometimes this can be done at the interview. Oftentimes, however, the Oath is taken at a ceremony. If the applicant's USCIS office does not hold the Oath the day of the interview and if the applicant successfully passed through the naturalization process, he will receive a notice in the mail notifying him of his appointment to take the Oath of Allegiance. Once the applicant takes the Oath, he is a full citizen.
