Illegal Immigration Facts

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) estimates that in January of 2006, more than 11.5 million illegal immigrants were residing in the United States. Essentially there are two types of illegal immigrants, those which entered illegally and remained in illegal status and those which entered legally but lost legal status for any number of reasons. The DHS also reports 8.4 million of the illegal immigrants living in the U.S. in 2006 were from the North American region, from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. Country reported by DHS as the leading source of illegal immigrants is Mexico with an estimated 6.6 million illegal Mexican immigrants in the U.S. in January of 2006. The U.S. States most affected by illegal immigration as reported by the DHS are California with an estimated 2.8 million illegal immigrants, Texas with an estimated 1.6 million illegal immigrants and Florida with an estimated 980,000 illegal immigrants. The enforcing arm of the Department of Homeland Security charged with identifying, investigating and removing illegal immigrants is the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
