Citizenship Guide

For immigrants entering into the complex naturalization process, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has published A Guide to Naturalization, document M-476. The 58 page booklet opens with discussing the benefits and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship highlighting that the path to citizenship is about making a commitment to the United States and its Constitution. The guide offers in-depth guidance and tips on navigating the process from starting with double checking the eligibility criteria to succeeding at the interview and citizenship tests. The guide also provides an explanation on what USCIS is looking for in terms of "good moral character" and "attachment to the Constitution." The guide also offers a copy of the Oath of Allegiance that all successful applicants take at the end of process. The guide also provides a useful, succinct walk-through the steps of the process, detailing the five basic elements to the process: preparing to apply, completing the application and getting photographed, getting fingerprinted, being interviewed and tested, and taking the Oath. For those struggling to understand the complex eligibility criteria, Form M-480, Naturalization Eligibility Worksheet, is included in the back of the guide to help simplify the criteria.
