Renew Passports

In order for a U.S. Citizen to renew a U.S. Passport, the applicant must submit either a Form DS-11 or Form DS-82 to the United States State Department for processing. Form DS-82 is designed to streamline the renewal process by giving applicants the convenience of applying for a renewal by mail. An applicant electing to use Form DS-82 must reside in either the U.S. or Canada and be in possession of an undamaged U.S. Passport. In addition, the passport must have been issued when the applicant was at least 16 years of ate, within the last 15 years and in the applicant's current name unless the applicant has legal documentation of a name change. If the applicant resides outside of the U.S. or Canada, in order to renew his passport, he will have to present himself in person at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Applicants who do not meet the criteria for the Form DS-82, must appear in person at a Passport Agency or Acceptance Facility to submit a Form DS-11. Routine processing time for passport renewals is estimated by the State Department to be 4 to 6 weeks. Applicants may, upon payment of an additional fee, elect for an expedited procedure estimated to take 2 to 3 weeks.
