Passports Renewing

For citizens of the United States, U.S. Passports are administered through the State Department. In order to renew a U.S. Passport, the State Department requires individuals to submit either a Form DS-82, Application for a U.S. Passport by Mail, or Form DS-11, Application for a U.S. Passport. In order for a citizen residing in the U.S. to qualify for passport renewal by mail, the passport must be undamaged, issued when the holder was at least 16 years of age and within the last 15 years, and was issued in the holder's current name unless the holder has legal documentation of his name change. If the passport is damaged or mutilated the applicant must apply for a passport in person at an Acceptance Facility or Passport Agency authorized by the State Department. For U.S. citizens residing abroad, except for citizens residing in Canada, passports must be renewed at the nearest U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate. U.S. Citizens residing in Canada may submit their applications for renewal by mail. The State Department warns individuals needing immediate assistance in renewing their passports to contact a Regional Passport Agency if the Passport is needed in less than two weeks for international travel or if the passport is needed within four weeks in order to apply for a foreign visa. Processing times for passport renewals may extend 4 to 6 weeks for routine processing or 2 to 3 weeks for expedited processing. The State Department also warns that for parents behind in child support payments that a passport may be withheld pending payment arrangements approved by the Department of Health and Human Services.
