In the United States, submission of Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, signifies an foreign national's desire to become a U.S. Citizen. In most cases, eligibility to submit Form N-400 is contingent on the applicant's status as a legal permanent resident (LPR), for example with a Green Card, and his continuous residence in the United States while under LPR status. In general, immigrants with LPR status who can demonstrate 5 years of residence in the U.S. can apply for citizenship. This time period should be calculated from the date that the applicant was granted LPR status as indicated on the Permanent Resident Card. Form N-400 requests information on the applicant's whereabouts in the U.S., family relations, employment and activities. Following submission of the N-400 form, the applicant is prompted to submit to an FBI criminal background check. Following the processing of Form N-400 and the criminal background check, the applicant will be given an appointment to appear for an interview. In order to verify the veracity of the information given on the N-400 application, the applicant will be asked questions related to information he has already given. The applicant may be expected to present evidence verifying his background. The cost to submit the Form N-400 is $675, except for individuals 75 years of age or older subject to a $595 fee.
