Employment Eligibility Verification Form I

The Employment Eligibility Verification Form, Form I-9, is used by employers in the United States to demonstrate compliance to a requirement forcing employers to verify the documentation of new hires in order to check the new employee's identity and work authorization in the United States. This requirement is administrated through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and enforced through the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Both the USCIS and the ICE are agencies within the Department of Homeland Security. Employers are required to maintain Form I-9 on file, accessible for inspection by authorized government officials or agents upon request for a period of one year following termination of the employee or three years from the date of hire of the employee, whichever is later. Examples of documents approved by the Form that demonstrate both work authorization and identity include U.S. Passports and U.S. Passport Cards. Documents that demonstrate only identity, such as State-issued driver's licenses or ID cards, must be supplemented by the employee by documents that demonstrate work authorization, i.e. immigration status, such as Social Security Cards or a Birth Certificate.
