Every year the United States supports immigrants from underrepresented countries in their efforts to set up a permanent residence in the U.S. through the Diversity Lottery. The Diversity Lottery is held by the State Department and is open to individuals from countries with low rates of immigration to the U.S. who have at least a high school education or its equivalent or at least two years of work experience in the last five years. In order to apply, entrants submit Form DS-5501, Electronic Diversity Visa Application, during the entry registration period, which is typically between October and December every year. The 2010 Diversity Lottery accepted applications between October and December of 2008. Notifications for the 2010 Diversity Lottery are mailed to "winners" between May and July of 2009. Typically, the State Department pulls at random 110,000 Diversity Lottery registrations and begins working to fill the visas until the quota of 55,000 Diversity visas are awarded. "Winners" of the Diversity Lottery are granted full rights to live and work in the United States as lawful permanent residents.
