Commission To Investigate Illegal Deportations To Mexico
A bill authored by Sen. Joe Dunn (D-Garden Grove) that would establish a commission to investigate illegal deportations of United States citizens to Mexico in the 1930s passed the state Senate Tuesday by a vote of 24-9.
"This legislation will ensure that survivors of the illegal deportations to Mexico will get an opportunity for justice for the terrible wrongs they endured in the 1930s,” Dunn said.
The commission, which would be created with private resources, would investigate the deportations and then determine if reparations are appropriate for survivors.
The legislation's companion measure, SB 670, passed out of the state Senate last week. That bill requires the state of California to apologize to the survivors of the deportations and directs the state to put a plaque in a public place to reflect that apology. Both bills will be heard next in the state Assembly.
Between the years of 1929 and 1944, the federal government embarked on a program to deport people of Latino descent to Mexico in order to open jobs during the depression. Many of those people were U.S. citizens or here legally by other means. About 2 million Latinos, including 400,000 Californians, were affected.
