Weldon Speaks at Press Conference to Promote Illegal Immigration Reforms

Washington, D.C., Dec 8, 2005
Weldon recently introduces the Truth in Immigration Act (TRIM) which would penalize countries that fail to cooperate with the U.S. in curbing illegal immigration into the U.S.

The bill would essentially require two key changes in current law. First, it requires the Department of Homeland Security to report annually the number of  illegal aliens in the U.S. by country of origin. Then based on that report, each country's immigrant visas will be reduced according to the number of illegal individuals in the U.S.

These are important changes considering that recent studies indicate that between 8 and 11 million illegal aliens were living in the U.S. in 2000. These numbers have grown further since then. Weldon's legislation recognizes the abuse of the U.S. immigration laws and works to ensure that our policies more readily reflect the realities of illegal immigration in the U.S.

The TRIM Act will send a significant and strong signal to nations that are sources of many illegal immigrants.  It will let those nations know that if they fail to cooperate with the U.S. government in cracking down on illegal immigration from their country, there will be consequences.
