NATURALIZATION BENEFITS

Naturalization receipts in February 2004 increased 34 percent, while approvals/oaths were down 4 percent, and denials were up 2 percent when compared to February 2003. For the first five months of fiscal year 2004, 172,422 persons took the oath of citizenship, an increase of 7 percent compared to the same period in fiscal year 2003.

APPLICATIONS FOR IMMIGRATION BENEFITS

Applications and petitions for immigration benefits in February 2004 decreased 16 percent compared to the number received in February 2003. February approvals were up 18 percent, while denials increased by 33 percent when compared to February 2003. For the first five months of fiscal year 2004, receipts decreased by 20 percent, while approvals increased 14 percent compared to the same period for fiscal year 2003.

ASYLUM

The number of applications for asylum in February 2004 decreased 37 percent compared to the number filed in February 2003. The pending caseload was 16 percent lower than in the same month last year.

REMOVALS

Total removals for February decreased 8 percent compared to the same month a year before. In February 2004, DHS removed 14,015 aliens from the United States, 5,984 of these aliens were criminals.
